Greetings to all members of SLA’s Arizona Chapter,
March is rapidly approaching and what a flurry of activity these past couple months have been! We sponsored The Power of Taxonomy event in January, which was a tremendous success! It was well attended and included people from as far away as Denver and Chicago. I specifically want to thank Noah Richman for spearheading this event, Katherine Bertolucci for being our mentor and guide, and the peerless Beth Gouwens for all things technical. Tucson was represented in January by a tour of the Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold archive conducted by Steven Jeffery and suggested by Ruth Kneale. This was the first for what I hope to be a series of tours of Special Libraries throughout the state. In February, Dale Steele provided a tour and lecture of Transportation Libraries at the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Coming up, Cindy Elliot will be hosting a SLA Happy Hour, Thursday, March 8, at Barrio Brewing Company from 5-8 pm. Details can be located in our Events section.
Our Yearly Meeting will be on Friday, May 25 at Spintato’s in Chandler from 12-3. I hope to see all of you there. For those unable to attend in person, web access will be available. More details will be sent closer to this event.
On a national level, the SLA Conference will be held in Chicago from July 15to 18. Complete details can be found at http://www.sla.org/content/Events/conference/ac2012/index.cfm
Here is the part where I get to ask you for your help. We have had an excellent start and many events are yet to come. But there is still so much more that we can do. I would like to continue the library tours and need volunteers to help with that. We are seeking your news and events for the Spring 2012 issue of the Bulletin. We still need a President Elect to serve as Vice President this year and President for 2013. We also need a Public Relations Liaison for the Northern Region as we have yet to hold any events there. If you are interested in helping out in any of these roles, please send me an email.
This is your Chapter and with your participation, we can have one of our best years ever!
Tracy V. Mertens
President, SLA Arizona Chapter
